Start It Up: Entrepreneurship for Impact & Building an Inclusive Economy in an Uncertain World
Today’s college graduates face an increasingly unstable job market, an economy in chaos, and declining rates of social mobility across their generation, particularly for Black Americans. They are starting their careers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has only magnified the crises of inequality and unemployment throughout the US. It is estimated that over 40% of Black-owned businesses will never reopen following the pandemic, only further compounding an existing lack of economic inclusion. Yet many young Black Americans are harnessing entrepreneurship and social innovation when it is needed most, and their startups and social enterprises are boosting small business growth. This session will highlight how college students and recent graduates, particularly those from communities of color, can:
- Find the seed capital, mentorship, and networks of support necessary to launch their enterprises and jumpstart their careers;
- Utilize technology as a tool for social good and to create more inclusive businesses and industries in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic,
- Exercise leadership in a polarized and deeply unequal world, while laying the groundwork for greater long-term social mobility; and
- Better understand the resources that may be available to help students launch or grow their businesses like CDFIs, Block Grants and Opportunity Zones.
